EXHIBITION: you are here
DATES: September 7 - 29, 2012
RECEPTION: Friday, September 7th, 5-8pm
The Brink Gallery is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition "you are here", by James Bailey.
Bailey's work examines maps/mapping as both objects and acts by exploring the systems and conventions of depicting, charting, categorizing and interpreting our environment and experiences. Through his investigations he re-presents his data through the lens of personal experience. The works in this exhibition are his explorations of Missoula. Through the use of both literal and abstract elements, his work represents a sort of personal geography.
"I am interested in the narrative of the map, the story it may tell, through its combination of science and art. Maps may be seen as portraits of a place, acting as symbolic devices to interpret a complex system. The fact and fiction of how we visualize and elucidate our world, and how that data is ultimately relayed to the viewer is what I am interested in exploring."
James holds a MFA from The University of Wisconsin-Madison and is currently an artist and Professor in the School of Art at The University of Montana.
James continues his research into both traditional and experimental approaches in printmaking. As an artist, James has exhibited his work nationally and internationally in over 200 exhibitions and national print portfolios throughout the United States and abroad. His work can be found in numerous public and private collections including those of the Walker Art Center, New York Public Library, Jundt Art Museum, Boise Art Museum, Mesa Arts Center, Hillard University Art Museum and Sioux City Arts Center.
Please join us for a reception with the artist on Friday, September 7th, 5 - 8pm.

Large Format Digital Prints:
The “Panorama” was first used by Robert Baker who
exhibited a painting of Edinburgh and London on a cylindrical surface which was
viewed from the inside. The field of vision for the human eye
varies among individuals between 160 and 180 degrees. Panoramic representations allow us to behold images larger
than our own personal vision. I believe in pursuing experiences which can remind
me that the world is always larger than I perceive it to be at a given
moment.
Medium Format Film Prints:
Seeing a newly printed photograph in a dark room emerge
from a blank white page and watching new life being born are very similar
experiences. With my prints, I hope to show you something you would not
have otherwise seen; an angle or detail otherwise passed by.

MISGIVINGS: A Year of Art
Lady Pajama
Artist Statement:
At the end of October my residency ends at the ZACC. I wanted to do a year of art show to compliment a year residency. And what a year it was. I had a baby on January 5th. Pregnancy put a stopper in my brain and plugged up what was normally an out pouring of artistic expression. Having the baby undid the stopper, but tied my hands. Despite my desire to do art my baby seems to monopolize my arms. Although my brain has endless hours of feeding time where it wanders thinking about all sorts of ideas for projects. A great amount of effort was put into even getting to express myself in these pieces. There was no time for self censorship or planning. Just stolen moments to scribble on paper. Oh, who would have thought.
