May is here - The rain is starting to fall which means The Garden City will be bright green in no time. May also marks the month the Missoula Cultural Council celebrates our sister city Palmerston North, New Zealand. On May 19th the MCC will hold our annual New Zealand Day at Fort Missoula, please visit  www.missoulacultural.org for more information.

The Brink Gallery presents ON DECK 7. ON DECK is a creation of the Montana Skatepark Association (MSA) and serves as an annual fundraiser for the organization whose mission is to fund and facilitate the construction of free, public, concrete skateparks across Montana. Past ON DECK auctions have helped the MSA to raise over $30,000 for skateboarding in Montana. The funding raised from OD7 will help with the MOBASH China Banks expansion and the brick banks repair.

On exhibition will be paintings, prints and posters which celebrate our National Parks. Sharrott Creek Gallery presents "Little Deuce Coupe". An exhibition of photographs of cars found on the road, along the rouad, or at the car shows from around Western Montana and the region. Gallery is open from 5:00 - 8:00 pm.






The Clay Studio of Missoula

In culmination of a two year residency at the Clay Studio, Eva Champagne will share her recent series of ceramic sculptures in an exhibition titled "Littoral Drift." Eva explains, “Littoral Drift is when materials are moved by waves and currents of the littoral zone. In coastal environments the littoral zone extends from the high tide mark, which is rarely inundated, to the very low tide mark, which is almost always submerged. Opening reception May 4, 2012, 5:30 - 9 am. Exhibition runs May 4th - 25th, 2012.  Stop on by at the Clay Studio on Friday, May 11 from 4-8pm, where the Clay Studio will offer a selection of hand made pottery and small sculptures perfect for Mother's Day. New work will be for sale featuring work by our resident artists Alison Reintjes, Audrey Rosulek, Eva Champagne, Lilly Zuckerman, Perry Haas, and Tai Rogers, as well as many other local ceramic artists.

Curiosity: Selections from the Permanent Collection, Paxson Gallery Based on “cabinet of curiosities”derived from the German wunderk√§mmer or 16th century assemblages that served as the first examples of museum collections. Features unusual, seldom-seen aspects of the MMAC Permanent Collection, that numbers nearly 11,000 objects.

House Design Studio presents Kim Anderson's Haiku series. For the Haiku series, I wanted to have fun with the poetry but also tie the images or feel of the painting to the overall message. I think of haikus as little sweet packages with a punchy zing at the end…kinda like how your Grandma was always so good at giving a small bit of advice that might not have really hit you until a few days later. I love this series because one of my greatest hopes for my work is that I can attempt to show a complex idea in a simple form.

I have been fortunate to experience life in a unique way through climbing, hang gliding, and various other activities. Music-fusion artist Jason Bohman will be painting live on stage at Draught Works this coming “First Friday”! Jason moved from the Ozarks of Missouri to Missoula in 2000. He has been an artist since childhood and in 2006 at the “Love Your Mother Earth Festival” Jason discovered live, music-fusion painting. He has painted alongside many local music groups including Miller Creek, Zeppo, Dodgy Mountain Men, and Butter. His biggest influence as a painter is the abstract expressionist, Willem deKooning. Jason’s pieces unfold with many layers of colors, shapes, and textures. His work is very unique and his style reflects a blend of graffiti, street and Native American imagery.

This month Bernice's Bakery presents Joshua Ludwick's "The Carcunkle Alien Laughs-a-Lot." Joshua Ludwick creates artwork with pen, paper, imagination and time. Each drawing typically takes 8 hours or more and is extremely intricate.  Whimsical and surrealist, hidden images delight the mind with unexpected dinosaurs, faces, aliens and the occasional bunnyman.

The Zootown Arts Community Center presents "Landlocked", a printmaking portfolio on display at ZooCity Apparel for the month of May.
