News from the Missoula Cultural Council


Summer has officially arrived here in the Garden City!

 The Missoula Cultural Council is staying busy on upcoming events. If you can believe we are already gearing up for First Night 2013, applications will be taken no later than Monday, July 2nd. Also, our 19th annual Germanfest celebration will once again be held in September at Caras Park, stay tuned for details.

This month's First Friday is jammed packed with events and fantastic artist's all over town. This month's sponsor is Prudential Montana Real Estate  located 314 N. Higgins Avenue,  they will feature the work of photographer John Mercer.

Missoula Art Museum

Block Party on Pattee! The museum will be open for viewing and MAM staff will be celebrating the renovation of Adventure Cycling (AC) outside, 5-8 PM. Catch a sneak preview of MAM’s outdoor sculpture garden too. AC will also have music and a beer tent.

Former long term Clay Studio resident artist Larry Phan returns to Missoula with his exhibition American Standard. Phan will display a diverse body of ceramic objects crafted for domestic use. Prudential Montana Real Estate presents the work of photographer John Mercer. John  is a fourth generation Montana native who fondly remembers many summers spent at the family cabin on Lake Inez in the Seeley Swan Valley. As he grew up, photography was a family affair starting with a Kodak Brownie camera and then an Instamatic. John and his brothers set up their own dark room in the family home.

Show Title: “TWENTY-THREE RANDOM MOMENTS: 1964-2002” EXHIBIT
Description: The exhibit “TWENTY-THREE RANDOM MOMENTS: 1964-2002” showcases twenty-three color images from the first thirty-eight years of William Albert Allard’s almost fifty year career as a photographer and writer for National Geographic Magazine. The pictures range from the Amish of Pennsylvania to the slaughter houses of Peru and the windblown poppy fields of Provence, France. Allard, who has published six books of his work, resides with his wife in Missoula and Charlottesville, Virginia..

VonCommon Studio is hosting YMCA Youth Art Camp Exhibit, featuring artworks created by YMCA Art Camp students taught by VonCommon resident artist, Chase McBride, alongside new works from the VonCommon artists Chase, B. Jean S., Jonathan Marquis, and Adelaide Every. VonCommon Studio is located at 139 E Main St Suite 316 in downtown Missoula, and this opening reception will run 5-8 pm

The Buttercup Market

The Buttercup Market and Cafe is pleased to host the paintings of Shea Ketcham in her show "Spring Reflections in Pastel." The work hangs from July 1 to July 31, with an artist's reception from 3 to 5 on Friday, July 6. Betty's July First Friday will showcase work by local artist Nicholas Kakavas. His show, entitled "Nonsense," is a collection of mixed media pieces, combining spray paint, glass, resin, and photography. The show will explore the nonsensical aspect of Kakavas' art, and its place in the art world at large. As always, the cheap wine and delicious Bernice's treats will be flowing!
