First Friday on May 6 kicks off another "Meet Me in Missoula" weekend, with numerous cultural events happening all over town.  This month's listing is the largest First Friday ever!  Visit www.missoulacultural.org for all the events of the weekend.

Big Sky High School Artists' Exhibition.  Meet the talented Big Sky High School artists who created this visual dialogue between the public high school, the museum, and the community. The eclectic composition of the exhibition expresses the excitement, Spontaneity, and freedom associated with the making of art. BSHS art teacher Dustin Hoon will talk about the student's works at 7 PM.





The Brink Gallery

The Brink Gallery is pleased to announce ON DECK 6, a creation of the Montana Skatepark Association (MSA) and an annual fundraiser for the organization whose mission is to fund and facilitate the construction of free, public, concrete skateparks across Montana. This year’s skate art show and auction will feature approximately 50 custom skateboard decks created by artists from across Montana and the United States.  Montana-based artists include Courtney Blazon, Matt LaRubbio, Trevor Parr,  Amber Bushnell and Kelly Smith.  Bidding will begin the night of the opening reception, will continue for two weeks online at montanaskatepark.org.  Please join us for an opening reception with many of the artists in attendance on Friday, May 6 from 5 - 8 pm.

The Artists' Shop, gallery of regional art and fine craft, presents BIRDFEST 2011. This annual show (display throughout the month of May) is a group show by local artists featuring avian art in many media. Artists include oil painter Tom Melhuse, (pictured here), painter Alan McNiel, raptor specialist Kate Davis, ceramicist Steve Thorstenson, Kiki Renander (stained glass), Sue Spanke (mixed media collage), jeweler Monica Van der Mars, and others to be announced. Native Plants and Pollinators: Original ink and watercolor pencil drawings by Nancy Seiler, 5-8 p.m.  This show is from a series of illustrations that Nancy did for the U.S. Forest Service publication “Attracting Pollinators to Your Garden Using Native Plants”. A western and eastern version of this publication was produced along with interpretive panels installed in Forest Service pollination gardens around the country. Native plants and seeds for sale along with native bee nesting boxes, pollinator note cards, and more!

During the day, come explore the Sotto Voce to find beetles inhabiting the store in the form of animations, illustrations, & decorated objects. At night, come discover the windows that come to life with beetles crawling along Amber’s hand made environment. During the show’s opening night ONLY, viewers will be able to further become part of the experience with a chance to eat & “wear” Amber’s illustrated Beetle Babes (yes EAT & WEAR on your skin!) Come have some fun and discover a whole new side beetles through the light, layers, & lace of “Beetle Babes”. 5-8 p.m.

Bernice's Bakery will be hosting Marlo Crocifisso Mixed Media for the month of May. Artist's Statement: "This month marks two years of painting on large scale canvas for me. I have been using canvas as a support and experimenting with many different forms
of mediums; water, oil, acrylic, charcoal, pastel, and spray-paint. I continually look for new ways to integrate the stencil onto painted backgrounds. This group of paintings was created amongst hearing and seeing the world report of Nations' rebellions, disasters, and on going conflict."  First Friday 5-8 p.m.
